Joanne Mattera is an inspiration to all of us worrying about how to create meaningful work and make it in the visual arts. As an exceptional working artist, instructor, conference coordinator, Web site/Blog developer and book writer, she is what we all hope to be when we grow up as artists – successful. Although I only know her from her works, I hope to meet her someday in person.
My first contact with Joanne Mattera was through her book, The Art of Encaustic Painting: Contemporary Expression in the Ancient Medium of Pigmented Wax. The book was recommended at an encaustic painting workshop at R&F Handmade Paints. Although several other books have been published since, this is still my main go-to book for this medium. If you paint using encaustics, you should own this book.
If you want to stay in tune with what is going on with encaustic painting, and the life of a working artist, check Joanne Mattera’s blog for informative articles and resources: http://www.joannemattera.blogspot.com/, as well as her website to see lucious beautiful paintings, http://www.joannemattera.com/.
Some of my favorite blog post topics are:
- Marketing Mondays: Adjunct Teaching, Rejection: Get Over It, and Juried Shows, Why Haven’t I Heard Back?
- The 2008 Trends and Coincidences, and Fair Weather series.
- Questions and rants for the rest of us: What are you doing about prices?, What jobs have you had?, and No, I will not donate to your auction.
Be sure to check out the information about the upcoming Third Annual Encaustic Painting Conference at Montserrat College of Art, “An International Event, June 5-7, with Post-Conference Workshops June 8-10.” I have already sent in my registration. See you there!
